It’s finally here! Cardtopia, the task card app, is in Beta release and Minds in Bloom followers will get to be the first to try it out! If you just want the link to try it out, click here. If you want to hear the whole story and find out why it is so awesome, read on.
How it Began
I started thinking about a task card app about a year ago. I was even looking into hiring someone to create it when my friend Marna (who runs an awesome math tutoring business) told me about her friends Eric and Mary Oemig whose company, Top Shelf learning had just released its first app Mathtopia. Pretty soon, we were all meeting at a local coffee shop to talk about how my task cards could become an app. Eric and his team (who are amazing, seriously!) went to work and did an stellar job. Of course, I love task cards that you print out and laminate, but the app offers some great features that I know you are going to love! Also, the app is free!
Why it Rocks
First off, it’s an app and we all know how motivating that will be for your students. Bright colors and immediate feedback will keep things popping, but there is so much more than that.
The heart of the app is the Teachers Lounge. This is an area where you can set up profiles for each of your students (it’s super easy). You can have up to 40 students in your class at any one time. Here is a little class I made just for fun (don’t you wish you just had six students!)
From here you can click on any students name to see all kinds of useful information – which sets the student has completed, how he did, and more. Don’t worry, the whole teacher’s lounge area is protected with a password, so your students will never see this data.
However, your students do each have a screen that they can see (you can choose whether to have student passwords or not to protect privacy). Each student has a profile screen that also serves as his or her launch screen. From here the students can select and play decks and track their progress. A deck can be played as many times as is needed for mastery. And, the cards will shuffle with each play!
This is Bobby’s profile page. As you can see, he has completed three decks and mastered one. He can select and play any of these decks. He can also click the button on the left to see his own stats for each deck.
More Cool Stuff
So what about the cards themselves? When you purchase a set of cards (and yes, a few of them are free), they will be automatically loaded into all of your students’ profiles for immediate use. So, up to 40 student profiles (5 if you are a homeschooler). There is no limit to the number of Ipads that can access the cards. Once you install the free app, you can log in from any Ipad to access your class.
Ready to try?
First off, please keep in mind that the app is in Beta. That mean that you may find a bug or two (hopefully not) and that there are many revisions ahead. In fact, if you find a bug or have a suggestion, you can email Eric at firstname.lastname@example.org. You are getting to try this Beta first because you follow Minds in Bloom.
Second, there are only about 20 cards to try at this moment and most of them were written by me (the content is the same as the ones I sell on TpT). However, more will be coming soon and the app is open to all task card creators, so others will be joining the party. In fact, you can create some yourself!
Third, if you have questions, please be sure to ask in a comment and I will answer as best I can.
Also, when you put card sets on your wish list, you get an email with a link to the Cardtopia Store where you can purchase points that you can use to purchase the cards.
