Use these 32 multiple choice Story Elements task cards to increase your students’ understanding of the building blocks that make up a story. Each card features a short passage that focuses on one of the following five story elements: setting, character, conflict, resolution, theme.
While some of these cards are fairly straightforward, others are more challenging and a few may have more than one answer. This may result in some of your students getting a few answers that differ from the ones provided in the answer key. If the student can justify his or her answer, then it can be considered correct. Cards focusing on theme are especially challenging. This increases the rigor of the activity and can be a great opportunity for discussion and debate!
The terms “conflict” and “resolution” are used instead of “problem” and “solution”. While both are acceptable, conflict and resolution are more accurate in a literary context and are generally used in the upper grades. If you use problem and solution, this is a great time to introduce alternative vocabulary.
