Description
These 12 words (trace, describe, explain, formulate, support, summarize, compare, contrast, infer, predict, analyze, and evaluate) are frequently featured in standardized test questions as well as other critical thinking activities. These task cards will help your students learn how to apply each of the words. Be sure they understand the definitions of the words before using the cards.
There are 4 sets of task cards with 24 cards in each set. Each word is featured twice in each set.
Set 1 (red) is designed to help students understand what to do when a specific Mighty Word is used in a question. Set 1 has a multiple choice format.
Set 2 (blue) requires students to apply the words to situations they are already familiar with. This will help them to focus on the meaning of the word and how it is applied rather than on trying to work out a challenging question.
Set 3 (green) features short passages with Mighty Word questions. Students must read the passage and then answer a question about it. This set requires more rigor than set 2.
Fun With Fairy Tales (purple) requires students to apply the Mighty Words to well-known fairy tales. This could be used with a folktale unit or just for extra practice. These might also be fun to do orally in partners or small groups.
Answer keys are included for all sets. For the last three sets, the answer keys are samples since the questions are somewhat open-ended and answers will vary. There are also student response sheets. There are two choices of response sheets for the last three sets. Another option is to have students record their answers on notebook paper or in interactive notebooks.
