The Story Behind the Story

One Amoeba was born many years ago when I had aspirations to write childrenโ€™s picture books. I left that dream behind in favor of writing nonfiction books, and later TpT products. I recently rediscovered the manuscript on my hard drive and thought that it might be of use to primary teachers. I knew I did not have the artistic talent to bring the amoebas to life, so I asked my friend Susannah Westby of Whimsy Workshop Teaching to create the amoebas. I was beyond thrilled at what Susannah came up with and hope that you and your students love these adorable amoebas as much as I do!

LOVE this book! I was looking for a resource to support my primary students’ math concepts. I’m a school librarian, so I try to identify books that integrate content areas whenever possible. I also look for books with great pictures and language. This one has all that — I love the rhyming language, the illustrations are ADORABLE (and clearly show the concept of doubling), and this provides the perfect integration of math and science. AND I can project it because its a pdf, so all my kids can see the pictures easily. Thank you so much for an awesome resource, Rachel Lynette! Seriously, I love it! Side note: after introducing it to my students, a hard copy (laminated and bound) is going in my maker space with playdough so my students can practice doubling their own ‘amoebas.’
