Students choose three of the nine prompts to write about at the start of the week. If your students journal five days each week, you could use the Tic-Tac-Toe prompts for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and have them write about whatever they choose on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Because they choose three prompts in a row, students must make choices, weighing one prompt against another. A student may very well find that in order to choose the prompt he most wants, he must also complete an prompt that he will find more challenging. However, that more challenging prompt is likely to be met with less resistance than if there was no choice and no more motivating prompt to go with it.

I left this in sub plans the week before Christmas and the kids did a wonderful job with it. I got some great writing from them and it kept them on task.
