Description

Making lists is a great way to get kids writing. Top Ten lists not only require students to generate ideas to match the category but also require them to evaluate each idea to decide if it is worthy of making the Top Ten for that category. Younger students will benefit from making the list in no particular order, while you may want to require older students to rank their choices.

NOTE: This resource uses American English and is not editable.

This document is formatted for two half-sized pages per sheet of paper. Each sheet has the same prompt twice for easy copying. Just copy and cut in half. There are several ways to use these pages:

Select the pages you want and make them into a “Top Ten” book (there is a little extra space at the top of each page for binding). Students can work in their books whenever they have extra time. Or you could use the books as bell work once or twice a week. Students can use the backs of pages for illustrations.

Choose one page, such as Top Ten Books or Top Ten Ways to Help the Planet and have every child complete it. Then bind the pages into a class book so that students can see each others’ lists.

Copy pages as needed to use individually as bell work, extra enrichment, or homework. If you require students to use their best handwriting, this could be a fun handwriting activity.

A Top Ten List makes a great jump-off point for further writing or discussion. Students can write or talk about why they choose what they did or take one of thing from the list to explore further.

Hereโ€™s what teachers are saying:

โœ๏ธ “Such wonderful ideas for our writing center! They are also great launching points for bigger writing pieces!” -Andrea S.

โœ๏ธ “I created a packet for each student of all pages in this product. My students keep this in their supply bin for times when they are done with other work and need something to do. They really like the ideas.” -Counting on Words

โœ๏ธ “Nice to have this center done for the year!” -Amy D.
