Description

Each of these 32 “Dictionary Dig” cards (or Google Slides) requires students to find a word in the dictionary that fits the given clue (Please note that you will need a hardcopy dictionary as this activity will not work with an online dictionary). The clues are open-ended, so there will be several possible answers for each one. In fact, one way to offer an extra challenge is to require students to find two different words for each card.

You can use the digital version individually or as a whole group!

Here’s a fun idea: Project one of the cards so that your students can see it. At their desks, have students race to find a word that matches the description. Students can earn a point if no other students chose their same word. You could even complete this activity with small groups.

Each card is numbered so students can easily track which cards they have completed. They can record their answers, along with the page number where they found them, on the included answer sheet.

There are also six Bonus Cards that require students to use the words they wrote on their answer sheets to complete. One option would be to have students to pick one or more of the bonus cards to complete on notebook paper.

I used this to help my students learn how to use the classroom dictionary for themselves. We’ve dramatically cut down on the number of times I’m asked, ‘How do you spell…’
