Paraphrasing and summarizing are both difficult skills to learn. To make matters worse, students often get them mixed up. That is why I created the PARA and SUM acronyms. Not only do they help to clarify each of the skills, but also serve as simple reminders. I hope these posters and reminder cards will help your students with these challenging skills.

I loved the poster. I created one with my class that sorts what summarizing is and what it is not. It seemed to help them some.

I tutor kids with learning disabilities and they are very resistive to writing. I have found that paraphrasing and writing it down is a very non threatening way to get them to learn to like writing. Very good for language and higher learning skills.

Didn’t end up using this more than a few times, but I really enjoyed it! I find it hard to describe to students how to summarize and paraphrase, and this broke it down very nicely.
