These can be used with any task card set, but were designed to be used with mine, which usually have 24 cards each. To use these Mini-Break cards, just select enough cards to make the difference between the number of task cards you have in the set you are using and the number of students (So if you have 24 task cards and 30 students, you would need six Mini-Break cards). Intersperse the Mini-Break cards throughout the other set. Ideally, students can use individual whiteboards to complete the Mini-Break Activities, but you could also use scratch paper. Mini-Breaks do not get recorded on the SCOOT answer sheet.

Instructions for SCOOT:

Give each student a pre-made answer sheet or have them number a piece of notebook paper for the number of cards in the set you are using. Do not include Mini-Break cards in the answer sheet. Distribute all cards (task cards plus Mini-Break cards) so that each student has one card on his or her desk. Students begin by answering the question on the card on their desks. After an appropriate amount of time (perhaps 2-3 minutes, depending on the age of your students and the cards you are using), the teacher says, “SCOOT,” and all of the students move to the next desk, where a new card awaits them. Continue until every student has completed every card (or until you run out of time). When students come to a Mini-Break card, they put their answer sheets down and use a whiteboard to do the task. Ensure students understand that they may not have time to complete the entire task, which is okay. Mini-Breaks are about the process, not the end result.
