Description

Do a little science and math with this digital Google Sheets product that helps students practice solving 1 and 2 step story problems with addition, subtraction, basic multiplication, and basic division. (Great for 3rd or 4th graders!) It includes 12 different word problems that students answer based on the recipe for baggie ice cream. If they answer correctly, parts of a pixel picture magically appear. Students will know they’re finished once the entire picture has been created.

This activity is great for math, but it can be used to actually make Baggie Ice Cream as well! It includes a projectable set of instructions, a printable booklet that students can take home when they’re done at school, and the printed version of the questions from the Google Sheets activity. Make the recipe and then complete the digital word problem activity, or use the recipe as a station for students once they’ve completed their math. Either way, it will be a lesson not quickly forgotten!

This product is easy to assign through Google Classroom. It’s great for partner work, math station activities, or just extra practice.

This was a wonderfully fun activity! Just a suggestion for those who use it, I recommend having some towels around to help with cleanup. 🙂

What student doesn’t love ice cream. This was such a great way to explore word problems. Students engaged in the activity and wanted to be done quickly. The end goal of being able to create the ice cream was bonus. They also do not realize that they are using science at the same time. I enjoyed watching them to get the right answers and the excitement of seeing what it gave them after answering the questions.

This year, I am teaching a 100% remote Gr 3 class (by parent choice). This resource was so engaging to my students! They loved making the recipe at home — a great hands-on experience that deepened their engagement in the math. Also, the picture reveal was a fun surprise! Thank you!
