Description

Guided two-step addition and subtraction story problems!

These 25 Google Forms are a great way for your students to practice solving multi-step addition and subtraction word problems.

Here’s how they work:

These are 3 or 4 step addition and subtraction story problems. But…

They are broken into three steps so that it’s not overwhelming for the students to solve.

Step 1: A simple problem is shown. The students will solve it and choose the correct multiple choice answer.

If they’re right, they move on to Step 2. If they aren’t right, they must try again.

Step 2: The problem from Step 1 has now been added on to. Since they’ve already solved a portion of the problem, it’s easier to think through the new part. If they’re right, they move on. If not, they will be guided to look at the portion of the problem that is new and try again.

Step 3: The student will solve the entire problem. But by now, they’ve worked through most of the problem and have a good idea of how to solve it. If they get it right, they get a success screen. If not, they will be guided to look at the portion of the problem that is new and try again.

This activity is self-grading and guides the students to work through the multi-step story problem in a progressive way. In this way, students learn to look at large problems by breaking into solvable chunks.

The first question (easiest) is worth 50 points and the other two are worth 25 points each.

As an elementary school teacher, I am always on the lookout for innovative and engaging resources to help my students excel in math. Recently, I came across the ‘Guided Two-Step Addition and Subtraction Story Problems’ product by Cassi Noack and Rachel Lynette of Minds in Bloom, and I must say, it’s a game-changer for teaching multi-step word problems. This set of 25 Google Forms is designed to help students practice solving complex addition and subtraction word problems in a structured and progressive manner. The way it works is truly genius. The problems are broken down into three steps, allowing students to approach them in a less overwhelming manner. Step 1 presents a straightforward problem, which students solve and choose the correct multiple-choice answer. If they get it right, they move on to Step 2. In case of an incorrect answer, the students are encouraged to try again, with guided hints to help them understand their mistake. Step 2 builds on the initial problem by adding more complexity. However, since the students have already solved part of the question in Step 1, they find it easier to tackle the new portion. Again, if they get it right, they progress to Step 3, and if not, the guidance continues. Step 3 is where students solve the entire multi-step problem. Having worked through the previous steps, they gain confidence and can approach the problem with a clearer understanding. A correct answer leads to a success screen, while incorrect responses prompt guided hints for further learning. What I love most about this activity is its self-grading feature. It saves me time and provides immediate feedback to my students, encouraging them to learn from their mistakes and improve. Moreover, breaking down the large problems into solvable chunks helps my students develop essential problem-solving skills. I also appreciate that each question is assigned different point values, making it easier to track my students’ progress and understanding of the concepts. The alignment with math TEKS 3.4A, 4.NBT.B.4, and Common Core 3.NBT.A.2 and 3.OA.D.8 ensures that the resource perfectly complements my curriculum. When I purchased the product, I received a PDF containing links to all 25 story problem Google Forms. The process of making my own copy and assigning it to my students was straightforward and user-friendly. In conclusion, ‘Guided Two-Step Addition and Subtraction Story Problems’ is an invaluable tool for any teacher looking to strengthen their students’ math skills. It fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and confidence in tackling complex word problems. I highly recommend this resource to fellow educators who want to see their students thrive in math.
