Description
Guided two-step addition and subtraction story problems!
These 25 Google Forms are a great way for your students to practice solving multi-step addition and subtraction word problems.
Here’s how they work:
These are 3 or 4 step addition and subtraction story problems. But…
They are broken into three steps so that it’s not overwhelming for the students to solve.
Step 1: A simple problem is shown. The students will solve it and choose the correct multiple choice answer.
If they’re right, they move on to Step 2. If they aren’t right, they must try again.
Step 2: The problem from Step 1 has now been added on to. Since they’ve already solved a portion of the problem, it’s easier to think through the new part. If they’re right, they move on. If not, they will be guided to look at the portion of the problem that is new and try again.
Step 3: The student will solve the entire problem. But by now, they’ve worked through most of the problem and have a good idea of how to solve it. If they get it right, they get a success screen. If not, they will be guided to look at the portion of the problem that is new and try again.
This activity is self-grading and guides the students to work through the multi-step story problem in a progressive way. In this way, students learn to look at large problems by breaking into solvable chunks.
The first question (easiest) is worth 50 points and the other two are worth 25 points each.

My students absolutely loved this resource! I would definitely recommend it!

I love the idea of having students complete multi step word problems. Curious if there is a way to see how many tries students took to get each one correct, versus just guessing until they pick the correct one and able to move on to next question.

I love the self-checking options. I had several students get frustrated, which actually made me happy because they couldn’t just click and move on. I love how the problems are set up and this is a great way to see who is still struggling when I am monitoring.

I loved these self-grading multi-steps word problems. The students cannot go on to the next step until they answer the first part correctly! I used this as a data tracking tool to check their progress in multi-step word problems!
