NOTE: This resource uses American English and is not editable.
There are two sets of 32 cards each. The first set is all in pictures while the second set presents the same problems in words. Since the problems on both sets are the same for each card, the included answer key will work for both sets. This means that you can mix and match the sets if you choose. For example, you could swap out the even numbers in one set for the even numbers in the other set so that you have two sets in which every other card is pictures. You can also leave the sets as they are and use the second set for more advanced learners.
In addition, within the sets, the cards are differentiated as follows:
- Card 1-10 feature only two types of candy
- Cards 1-20 have sums within .99ยข
- Cards 21-31 have sums that are between $1.00 and $2.00
- Card 32 requires students to add everything in the store (a fun challenge for those who are able)
There are also three Challenge Cards. Challenge Card #1 can be used with any other card and requires students to make change from a dollar (or two dollars in cards 21-31). A Challenge Card #1 Answer Sheet is provided. The other two challenge cards allow students to select candy from the store and add up the totals.
Three student answer sheets are included. One allows students to record the answers for all 32 cards. A second answer sheet has space to record answers for just the first 20 cards. This one could be used for students who are not yet ready to move beyond a dollar. The third answer sheet allows students to record which coins they used for each card.
For students who are learning to count coins, be sure they have a supply of real or play coins to work with as they solve these problems. If you would rather students focus on adding and subtracting money amounts, you can have them write the amounts for each type of candy on paper in equation format and then add them up. Advanced students will enjoy the challenge of solving the problems mentally.

My students loved this activity! I gave them a black and white menu to color in for themselves as we went over the directions. They loved the different questions and then making their own orders too! Giving them an amount of money to spend in the store based on how many questions they got right was a hit! Next week, maybe we’ll have an owner of the store who will make change! I love that this resource can be used with struggling students and advanced students. Thank you!

This was a bit too easy for my fifth graders, but a good way to demonstrate real life application if adding decimals.

I absolutely LOVE this resource!!! I printed the task cards in color and laminated them. I really like that I can choose to use the visual representations or just the words in order to stimulate my students thinking. I have also started to use real coins with them in order to help them learn currency. Thank you for creating such a fun activity!!

Thank you for these bright task cards. They are a fun, colourful way to practise adding coins. I’m going to use your suggestion for mixing them up, and have some picture and some word problems in the pile. As I live in Australia, I’m going to tweak the jellybeans to 5c each, as we no longer use 1c or 2c coins in Australia.
