  • Print the black-line version and use it for interactive notebooks. Students can glue the cards in their notebooks, correct directly on the cards using editing marks, and then rewrite the sentences.
  • Have students work on cards with partners, comparing their sentences before correcting them.
  • Save answer sheets over the course of the year and use them to make a Fun Facts book for students to keep.

* All facts were found in the book: 5,000 Facts (About Everything), National Geographic Kids, 2012

Please note that these cards are somewhat United States-centric, meaning that measurements are not given in metric and words are spelled using US English. Since they are editing cards, they may not be appropriate for those living outside the US.

Teacher Tip

Hereโ€™s what teachers are saying:

โœ๏ธ “Um, editing skills? Yes, please! Why? They help my students become better writers without the same pressure that editing their own work puts on them. How does this make them better writers? It fine tunes their eyes for common errors and mistakes, thus making them better at catching their own mistakes when they write or read over their own writing for their peer’s writing. Honestly, I love all your resources, so, obviously, I count this as another excellent tool to have in my teacher toolbox.” -Ariane O.

โœ๏ธ “My students have enjoyed these cards. They are quite versatile – we have used them with the recording sheet and as a game. Great resource for reviewing editing skills!” -Lisa V.

โœ๏ธ “These tasks are great practice for students. My students enjoy finding all the mistakes. They also enjoy the interesting facts on each card.” -Sherry T.

My students are loving the fun facts and finding the errors. Even my reluctant kiddos are engaged with this work. The editing is helping them realize when they make errors in their own writing. Perfect resource and thank you for making a slides version as well!

  9. M Keates

We use this as our entry task each day and it is making a huge difference in the students’ writing. Thank you!

  10. Stephanie F.

I used this resource with my seventh grade class during distance learning this year. Many students were struggling with spelling and grammar. I would have students work on a few of these at the start of our English classes. It worked well.
