Each of the featured words appears on two cards. For example, the word “duck” appears on card #1 as the waterfowl and again on card #17 as the verb, to bend down. Not only will this help to solidify the words and their meanings, it may also help some students to self-correct as they work.

Teacher Tip

Hereโ€™s what teachers are saying:

โœ๏ธ “A lot of my students really struggle with the fact that there can be two meanings for a word, let alone explaining the two meanings. This resource has been great because it allows them to see the meaning in a sentence before identifying it. It is a great starting place for teaching multiple meaning words.” -Miss Sneed

โœ๏ธ “This is a great resource for distance learning. It was easy to share the document on the computer and aligned with the grade-level learning target appropriately.” -Carly J.

โœ๏ธ “Great resource! I like that the students has to pick the definition for each word. That way they had to think about each definition and which one was really being used based on the sentence.” -Kristy C.

My students and I enjoyed using the task cards and practicing.

  2. Lauren M.

These task cards have been a wonderful activity to use when there is extra time to fill. The activity is appropriately challenging for my learning support students!

  3. Cayce G.

I love that the homonyms that were chosen were pretty straightforward for beginners. I think having the visual of different homonyms on the task card was a bit confusing for some of my students but overall enjoyed this product.

This was a good resource to add to my multiple meaning toolkit

  5. The Teaching Post

We used this resource as an end of year review for multiple meaning words. I used it in small group and had so many light bulb moments with my students. I highly recommend this resource to anyone who is struggling to find success with teaching/practicing multiple meaning words.

  6. Sheryl S.

My students loved these task cards. Some of the words were tricky for them. They thought they automatically knew what the word meant, but it did not make sense in the sentence. It was a great way to reinforce using context clues!

This activity has been really helpful for my speech therapy students. Thank you!

  8. Amanda G.

I enjoy using this packet. It is very handy when explaining different meanings. Most of my students get stuck on one definition but this allows them to think and see the two

This is a good resource to use to quickly assess my students’ ability to understand multiple-meaning words within their instructional reading levels.

  10. Eva S.

Fun to do in groups of 2 and discuss them practising the language
