  • Main Idea Bundle

NOTE: This resource uses American English and is not editable.

The paragraphs on Set 1 begin with a topic sentence, which makes it easy to find the main idea. These are great for third-grade students and students in higher grades that may need some extra practice. The paragraphs on Set 2 are similar to Set 1 except that they do not have a topic sentence and the main idea is not clearly stated. Students must instead infer the main idea. Set 2 is much more challenging and would be good for fourth grade and above.

The included Answer Sheets are also differentiated. The first one is multiple choice, while the second, more challenging one, requires students to write the main idea out. Both Answer Sheets are two pages (you may print them double-sided) and you could use either one with either set of cards. Answer Keys are also provided so students can check their work.

In addition, there are two Challenge Cards that can be used with any other card in either set. The Challenge Cards ask students to recount supporting details and explain how they are related to the main idea.

Teacher Tip

Here’s what teachers are saying:

✏️ “Loved these task cards! Paired with my Main Idea and Details Unit it really reinforced the skill. Used it as a SCOOT game and the students loved it! Being in a co-teaching classroom, it benefited to pair students so that my struggling readers could listen to a stronger reader but still be able to give input regarding the main idea.” -Emily C.

✏️ “These task cards were perfect for center time during Guided Reading. Thanks for making such an awesome resource that I can use over and over for years to come.” -Krystal Styles.

✏️ “I am new to task cards, but I have downloaded several of your packs and have started using them in my classroom. The students are very engaged, and they are able to practice their skills in manageable amounts. Thank you for all of your hard work! It is sincerely appreciated!” -Elise D.

  1. Danielle Y.

I love that I can differentiate with these. I have students on all different levels in my classes, and I feel like this is a one stop shop since there are different levels.

  2. Learning Sparks Joy

This set of print and digital task cards is amazing for reinforcing main idea! I think it’s so important to expose students to high-interest, short informational passages, especially when requiring students to identify the main idea. Task cards are so helpful in centers or classroom games like Scoot. Amazing resource!

  3. Teresa M.

I used this as a supplemental tool in small groups. I could easily find a passage that worked for the gorup I worked with.

  4. TeachGrowInspire

I love using task cards in my classroom and these were perfect. I loved having the differentiated options so all of my students could enjoy them fully! Thank you!

  5. Samantha S.

Great activity for differentiating main idea! I was able to have one group of students work on the cards around the room, while the other ones worked in a small group!

  6. Michelle G.

I used these with my homeschooled daughter. It allowed her freedom to move around as she got her work done and I was able to gauge how much she learned.

  7. Mindy E.

Thank you for a wonderful tool to use with my students in a K-5 resource classroom. Thank you for the audio support. It is beneficial when I am working with students below grade level.

  8. Meagan H.

I purchased these cards, mostly, for small group work. They are great! I love having the differentiation within one purchase. The audio is also a great feature for my lowest students who struggle with reading.

  9. Christina H.

I love this resource. I used it with my 5th grade class as well as summer school classes. These are pleasing to the eye, have great examples and I appreciated the audio part for struggling readers.

  10. Bri L.

My students loved that they are able to review how to find a main idea of a small passage while also getting up and moving.
